Knoxville Isn’t Chicken

With a current est’d population of 200K, the 224 y.o. city of Knoxville, Tennessee is a major urban area. But that isn’t raising any feathers on its City Council.

An ordinance which would allow residents of the ‘Marble City’ to have backyard chickens received unanimous support this past Tuesday. There are some major changes being contemplated, but nothing that will stop the final approval from happening.

Here are some of the details:

  • six chickens on any size lot
  • hens but no roosters
  • environment must be clean and odor-free
  • chicken feed must be stored so other animals can’t get at it
  • animal control officers will be able to make inspection visits
  • there will be a $50 permit fee
