The City of London has released its most comprehensive analysis of Census data in a document titled A Statistical Portrait of London’s Neighbourhoods. The document contains socio-economic and demographic data from the 1996, 2001 and 2006 Census and is a valuable tool for the City and outside users to understand the similarities and differences that exist within our community, and how these change over time.
Some interesting data findings from the City’s recent analysis shows:
- Since the last census in 2001, London’s population increased at an annualized rate of 0.94% or 15, 856 people. In 2006, 352, 395 people called London home. At this annual growth rate, we estimate that there are now 365, 200 living in London.
- Among Londoners who are new Canadians, the top five backgrounds by place of birth are: (1) United Kingdom -11,815, (2) Poland – 5,105, (3) Portugal – 3,920, (4) United States – 3, 465 (5) Italy – 2,770. Londoners report speaking 48 different languages and identify their ancestral origins from 144 distinct ethno-cultural backgrounds.
- Between 1996 and 2006, median family income rose from $50, 591 to $68,648
- Home ownership within the City continues to increase with about 62% of Londoners owning their own home. The number of those renting accommodations declined for the first time in 15 years
